Here are our five golden rules for writing aviation cover letters:
1) The basics: a formal letter layout
Presentation and formality are immensely important in any sector, but particularly in aviation, so be sure to bear this in mind for your application.
Use a formal letter layout featuring:
• Your full address at the top, followed by the date
• The contact name, company name and company address immediately afterwards
• Formal salutation (‘Dear’) and signature (‘Yours sincerely’)
• Introductory paragraph that states your intention and how you found the vacancy
• Four to five paragraphs covering your skills/experience and demonstrating your knowledge of the company
• Your full name and contact details (phone and email) at the end
Avoid using a template, as keen-eyed recruiters will spot this straight away.
And, don’t forget, this is your opportunity to say anything that your CV can’t. So, use this space wisely.
2) Check for mistakes… then, check again!
It’s likely to take several drafts to get your aviation cover letter just right, but the potential results are well worth the effort.
Employers will be on the look-out for accuracy and attention to detail. So, when checking your letter, be particularly aware of your:
• Use of technical terminology, abbreviations and jargon
Having a break between drafts and checking with fresh eyes is a good idea, as is printing the document off to read through it.

• What skills and experience you gained in these roles
This level of specificity will show you’re serious about your application and give recruiters the information they need to decide whether you’re the right fit.
4) Emphasise key aviation industry qualities
Talk about qualities aviation companies tend to prioritise to show you understand what will be expected of you. These tend to be:
• Team-working abilities
• Problem-solving skills and an ability to use initiative under pressure
• Safety and security consciousness
• Willingness to follow instructions and conform to regulations
• Efficiency and timekeeping skills
Then, add in a few extra qualities or transferable skills that make you a unique proposition.
5) Adapt your cover letter for every application
You can’t be sufficiently specific with your aviation cover letter unless you re-write it for every application.
Demonstrating that you understand both the role and company ethos is a minimum requirement.
You can perhaps recycle a few points, but most of the letter should be tweaked in some way for each application to make it more relevant to specific employers.
